In 2020, Charity Nest launched its impactful initiative in rural Uganda, aiming to support one of society's most vulnerable groups: street children. These children often lack parental support and stable homes, facing significant challenges in their daily lives. Many are forced to leave their families due to poverty, abuse, or neglect, leading them to live on the streets. This harsh reality means they often have to abandon their education to survive, making them susceptible to exploitation and limiting their future opportunities. Understanding the urgent need for action, Charity Nest set out to create lasting change in their lives.

Leading this initiative is Kyagera Mwesigwa, a remarkable individual with a powerful story of resilience. A graduate of Public Health from Makerere University—one of the oldest and most respected universities in Africa—Kyagera has devoted his life to helping others. His commitment to assisting those in similar situations comes from his own experience as a former street child. He embodies the idea that with support and education, it’s possible to change one's circumstances.

Kyagera's journey is truly inspiring. He faced the harsh realities of street life, yet he persevered and completed his education, earning a degree in Public Health from Makerere University, one of Africa’s leading institutions. In 2021, he was appointed the Uganda Regional Lead for Charity Nest.

Determined to uplift others who faced similar hardships, Kyagera initiated programmes aimed at empowering street children. He began by imparting essential skills in farming and food preparation, drawing from his experience with Food Harbour International. He established community gardens where children learned to cultivate their own food, thereby fostering a sense of responsibility and pride within the community.

Rural Healthcare Emergencies

Our inaugural major project in Uganda aimed to provide critical healthcare funding for individuals in emergency situations in rural areas who otherwise could not afford assistance. Among the inspiring stories that emerged from this initiative is that of William, a resident of a rural Ugandan village whose life was in the balance with help.

William suffered severe burns covering 60% of his body in a tragic accident, leaving him unable to work and struggling to support his wife and infant daughter. With his family facing hunger and his life at risk, William's situation was critical. Recognising the urgency, Charity Nest, under Kyagera's guidance, organised and funded life-saving surgery for William at Uganda's leading hospital in Kalampa.

Thanks to this intervention, William made a full recovery and returned to work, providing for his family once again.

Special Memories for Street Children

One of our most cherished memories from our campaign in Uganda was the special Christmas celebration we organised for street children in Kalampa, who would otherwise have spent the day in solitude. Kyagera, alongside our dedicated team in the UK, arranged a festive meal, an enjoyable party, and thoughtful gifts for the children. This initiative brought joy and laughter to those who often go unnoticed during the holiday season. Overwhelmed with gratitude, the children expressed their heartfelt thanks to the Charity Nest team - making our Christmas just as special.

Establishing Brave Kids Academy

In 2023, Charity Nest helped Kyagera set up the Brave Kids Academy, a new school specifically for street children. This initiative aims to meet the urgent need for accessible education in a community where many children struggle to find opportunities for learning. The Brave Kids Academy offers free education, allowing children to learn without the worry of tuition fees.

Beyond being just a school, the Academy is a source of hope for these young individuals. It empowers them to dream of a brighter future. With a focus on both academic subjects and practical life skills, the school encourages creativity, critical thinking, and resilience. It creates a nurturing environment where children can grow and develop, fostering a sense of community that helps them thrive. The Brave Kids Academy stands as a powerful example of how education can transform lives, inspiring these children to break free from the cycle of poverty.

The story of Charity Nest in Uganda is one of compassion and community spirit. It shows that with determination and support, lives can be transformed. Through Kyagera's leadership, countless street children are finding a path to a better future—filled with opportunity, education, and hope. Together, we are building a brighter tomorrow, one life at a time.
